Director & Choreographer,  Jennifer Ma

Jennifer Ma is a Naarm-based Taiwanese-Australian dancer, choreographer and producer. Jennifer's collaborative dance practice sees her working with dancers across street and contemporary dance; choreographing works for theater and film. At its core, Jennifer’s practice aspires to elevate the presence of culturally diverse artists. Her collaborative processes house her keen interest in the embodiment of multiplicity within personal narratives. 


Jennifer studied at Transit Dance under the mentorship of Adam Wheeler and Israel Aloni. She was a member of youth dance company, Yellow Wheel; street dance collective, Mute Crew; Dancehouse’s Emerging Choreographers Program (2019 – 20); a recipient of the City of Melbourne Arts Residency 2022; and the Detour Interconnected Dance Fellowship 2023. In recent years, Jennifer has worked with local and international artists including Jo Lloyd (Collision, 2022), Stephanie Lake Company (Colossus, 2018 & 2019), Su Hui-Yu (White Waters, RISING 2022) and more.


Jennifer’s previous cross-genre dance works (HOME(S), We Are Here) have been presented by Dancehouse and Bunjil Place, and have received generous support from Chunky Move, City of Yarra, City of Stonnington, Creative Victoria and Australian Council for the Arts. 
 
With a keen interest for dance on film, Jennifer has made multiple short dance films with her diverse collaborators highlighting– Accumulating series with David Prakash (Bunjil Place, Hyphenated Biennial), Surfaces (Gertrude Street Projection Festival, directed by Rachel Main, 2021).
 
In efforts to share her collaborative practice with the wider dance community, Jennifer was a mentor for street dancers of ‘Sister Sessions’, L2R Dance’s Igniting Legends Program and facilitated numerous cross-genre dance workshops with her collaborators.
